As Chicago celebrated the Presidential nomination and eventual election of their would-be native son, the shooting deaths of 125 Chicagoans was barely a blimp on the national radar. Yet, between the 2008 Memorial and Labor Day holidays, the shooting death toll in "The City" was nearly double the national treasure lost in Iraq during the same time period.During the 2006-07 academic year, 32 Chicago students were killed. By March of the 2008-09 academic year, 26 students were killed. (Source) Less than a week ago, Corey McClaurin, a senior at Simeon Career Academy High School, and Corey Harris, a basketball player at Dyett High School, were both claimed by gun violence, and seven other students have been shot in September. And on Thursday, September 24, Fenger Honor Student, Derrion Albert was beaten to death on school grounds.
As Chicago vies for the 2016 Olympics with the help of its most Favored Son, I pray for your less favored sons and daughters to whom you turn a blind eye.
